The leader of Barnet Council has been helping out at a distribution hub sending essential supplies to the borough’s vulnerable residents.

Cllr Dan Thomas joined volunteers delivering food, drink, soap and other products to residents, food banks and organisations for the vulnerable such as Homeless Action in Barnet.

The Essential Supplies Hub has so far delivered more than 100 parcels to residents throughout the borough.

Similar hubs are operating across the city, providing supplies to Londoners affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Cllr Thomas put in his first shift at the hub on Monday (April 6) and hopes to help out regularly alongside his duties as council leader.

He also plans to volunteer at the Community Help Hub – a collaborative project between the council, Barnet Together, and a network of charities, faith groups and businesses providing local support for people affected by Covid-19.

Cllr Thomas (Conservative, Finchley Church End) said: “It’s an honour volunteering at the Essential Supplies Hub, alongside our committed staff and volunteers.

“These packages are going to those in our community who need them most – the elderly and the vulnerable. The produce has come from the Felix Project as well as local restaurants and other companies in Barnet.

“These are challenging times for everyone, and I am proud of how the people of Barnet have stepped up to the challenge by supporting the community and charities, giving blood and importantly, by just staying at home. These small actions are making a real difference and saving lives.

“The council will continue to do all it can to support the people of Barnet through these difficult times.”
