A burglar who left one of his gloves at the scene of a stabbing has been jailed for 12 years.

Mohammed Hussain, of no fixed address, was jailed at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday (17 March) following charges of two counts of robbery and wounding after he burst into the home of a young family last November and stabbed a man.

In the early hours of Saturday 23 November, 28-year-old Hussain and a group of accomplices, forced entry to a house in Acocks Green in Birmingham and demanded jewellery and money from a couple who were awoken by the noise.

At around 3.30am that morning a man who went downstairs to see what the commotion was in his home, was stabbed in his arm so viciously, that it broke. He was also slashed in the neck and passed out as his wife fended off the armed robbers.

In amidst the chaos, Hussain’s make-shift face covering using an old t-shirt slipped, meaning he revealed his identity to the woman. She was instantly able to recognise him as someone she came across before.

The armed men eventually made off with the couple’s Volkswagen Passat car and a police investigation was immediately launched to trace the attackers.

Enquiries led police to the stolen car which was found four and a half miles away near to Cannon Hill Park a few days later and after the woman provided information on who the main attacker was, officers were able to begin tracing his whereabouts.

On Tuesday 26 November, Hussain was found staying at a friend’s house and when the property was searched, the key to the stolen car was found, alongside weapons and crucially the matching glove to one that had been left at the scene of the crime.

PC Rebecca Woodcock from the Force CID team, said: “Although nothing will change the traumatic experience a husband and wife went through when a group of armed men burst into their home, I hope the sentence Hussain has received can issue some comfort, knowing the person who hurt them, has been put behind bars for a substantial amount of time."

Enquiries continue to trace the other offenders who were wearing masks. Anyone with information is asked to contact us via Live Chat at west-midlands.police.uk between 8am and midnight, or call 101 anytime.
