PUPILS at a school in Oxford where the England rugby squad has been training are staying at home as a precaution against the coronavirus after returning from a trip abroad.

St Edward’s School in Woodstock Road is taking the 'quarantine' precaution as schools across the county followed advice from Public Health England on how best to keep staff and pupils safe.

Burford School has been closed after a after a student who came back from Italy reported feeling unwell and it is due to reopen on Monday following a ‘deep clean’.

A school spokesperson for St Edward’s said: “A small number of our pupils who have recently travelled to an affected area, or had close contact with someone who has travelled to an affected area, either have been, or are currently, undergoing a period of quarantine at home. Since our half term was earlier than many, most of our pupils are now back in school.

“These are precautionary measures only and we have no concerns about the health of any member of our community (with regard to coronavirus) at present - though of course, as with all schools, we continue to monitor the situation closely and to follow the latest advice given out by PHE.”

St Edward’s has not revealed the affected area pupils travelled to but is understood to be in Italy.

Pupils at Europa School UK in Culham are thought to have recently returned from ski resort Aprica in northern Italy with a number of them displaying flu-like symptoms.

Italy is the main focus for cases in Europe with the number totalling about 400. School Principal Lynn Wood said there was no cause for alarm, with lessons continuing as normal. She added: “We encourage our children to go on trips to Europe and in the UK.”
