A Year 12 student at Chesham Grammar School, Narishma Pisavadia, has been awarded a prestigious national award.

Narishma was recently awarded a coveted Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.

Over the past four years Chesham Grammar School has had an unprecedented eight students recognised as Arkwright Scholars as part of a drive to inspire future leaders in engineering.

Ms Pisavadia joined a group of the country’s most talented students who were honoured at ceremonies in London and Edinburgh as they received the Arkwright awards.

The successful applicants, who have all undertaken a rigorous, year-long application process, were invited to receive their accolade at ceremonies held at the Institute of Engineering and Technology in London.

This year almost 1,400 students applied for the awards, following nominations from their schools.

Arkwright Scholars are selected for their potential as future leaders by assessing their academic, practical and leadership skills in engineering disciplines.

The scholarships support students through their sixth form studies and encourage them into top universities or higher apprenticeships while offering access to a range of enrichment experiences.

There is an annual financial award to each scholar and to her school, and enrichment activities such as mentoring and industry visits that enhance a scholar's experience of engineering in a real-world context.

Narishma spoke about her experience, she said: “Being awarded the scholarship has given me the confidence to pursue a career in Biomedical Engineering.

"The process to achieve the scholarship was a difficult but educational experience since I had never experienced anything like it before!

"I am thankful for this opportunity and the support that my teachers, sponsor and mentor are offering.”

Chesham Grammar School Headteacher, Annmarie McNaney said, “I am hugely proud of Narishma, who has gone above and beyond in her commitment to achievement in her field of study. Our Engineering teachers inspire and develop students to the best of their ability, and this prestigious award is well-deserved.”

Subject Leader for Engineering Mark Harvey added, “We are delighted that one of our Engineering students has been recognised again this year with an Arkwright Scholarship.

"The technology and engineering curriculum at CGS encourages a creative and problem-solving approach to learning, which is an excellent base for future success in any university course or future employment.“
