THE husband of a teacher beaten to death has been charged with her murder.

Amy Appleton was beaten to death in Crawley Down before Christmas.

She died alongside her neighbour, Sandy Seagrave, 76, who is believed to have been fatally attacked with her own walking stick when she intervened to try to help Mrs Appleton.

Daniel Appleton, Amy’s husband was released from hospital on Friday and charged with the double murder on Saturday.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “A man has been charged with the double Crawley Down murder.

“Daniel Appleton, 37, of Hazel Way in Crawley Down, was released from hospital on Friday (24 January) and later charged with two counts of murder.

“Sussex Police launched a murder investigation following the deaths of Sandy Seagrave, 76, of Kiln Road, Crawley Down and Amy Appleton, 32, of Hazel Way, Crawley Down. They were both found dead outside a house in Hazel Way after police were called to the address at 10.18am on Sunday 22 December.

“Appleton remains in custody and will appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Monday (27 January).”

The 32-year-old taught at the Copthorne Church of England School and was a committed member of St John’s Church there.

Amy’s family described her as the most “beautiful, caring daughter, sister and friend” with an “amazing personality.”

“She was such a strong, positive person who always smiled. She was a rock for her family, a rock for her friends and most of all a rock for herself.

“Amy always thought of others before herself.

They said: “Amy led the life she was destined to fill, following her passions. Her school will be missing an incredible, dedicated teacher, she gave 110 per cent to her pupils. Her light will always shine in our lives but a hole has been left with broken hearts.

“The whole family would like to send heartfelt thanks for all kind messages and thoughtful tributes. Keep shining our girl, you will forever be in our hearts.”

Ms Seagrave’s family described her as “one of a kind, an eccentric character who was stubbornly independent, feisty, brave and not afraid of anything.

“She was devoted to children and especially animals, including a wild fox who we are continuing to feed now that she has gone.”

Daniel Appleton was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton in a critical condition following the incident.

He is now in custody and will appear at Crawley Magistrates' Court on Monday.
