DANNY Tetley enjoyed three spells in the national spotlight throughout his singing career, appearing on Pop Idol, Benidorm and X Factor.

The 39-year-old has now hit the headlines for his private life, having been jailed for nine years for sexual offences against seven teenage boys.

His first spell under the nation’s gaze saw him reach the final 75 in the first series of Pop Idol in 2001, which shot his fellow Bradfordian Gareth Gates to fame when he finished second.

The former Salt Grammar School student also entered Popstars: The Rivals a year later, but was unsuccessful in his audition.

But it was in 2018 – the year he committed some of the offences which have landed him in prison – that his singing career reached its peak.

Tetley advanced to the live shows in that year’s edition of popular Saturday night family show X Factor, eventually finishing in sixth place.

The Shipley-born singer won a loyal band of fans while on the show, wowing the crowds with renditions of hits including Celine Dion classic ‘My Heart Will Go On’.

He also recovered from a throat infection in time to perform Madonna’s ‘Crazy For You’ during that week’s guilty pleasures-themed show.

He was eliminated from The X Factor during the show’s semi-final, alongside fellow contestant, Irish plumber Brendan Murray.

After his exit, Benidorm performer Tetley said: “This is only the start for me.

“I love you guys, the team, Simon Cowell, thank you - we’ve got friendship, it’s awesome, I love you.”

His mentor on the show, Ayda Field Williams said that Tetley “has been my hero this entire competition, I’m going to miss him so much, but I’m still going to Yorkshire and having a Tetley’s bitter with him.”

During his final appearance on the show, Tetley tackled Shirley Bassey’s This Is My Life, as well as taking part in a group performance of Abba hits.

Tetley also got to rub shoulders with Abba’s Bjorn Ulvaeus, who helped prepare the contestants for the routine during Tetley’s final show.

During his stint on the programme he also returned to the district, making a homecoming appearance at the Low Moor Club on Huddersfield Road which raised money for the Yorkshire branch of the Cleft Lip and Palate Association.

Tetley also returned home not long after his X Factor departure in December 2018 when he helped launch Bradford Bulls’ new home and away kits.

The singer appeared with members of the Bulls’ first team squad at the Broadway shopping centre.

Tetley revealed to the Telegraph & Argus in January last year that he was going to Los Angeles to work with Robbie Williams.

The singer spent time with Robbie on the show as he was being mentored by the star’s wife Ayda Field Williams.

He visited Robbie’s mansion in Los Angeles as part of the judges’ houses section of the show, saying he had been invited back.

Danny said: “My next trip is off to LA to meet up with Robbie.

“We’ve become really good friends.

“He’s got about 80 songs he has already written.”

Tetley said he wasn’t sure whether he would be recording one of them with Robbie but they would look at the songs and decide on one for Tetley’s next single.

He also made a singing cameo appearance in ITV sitcom Benidorm in both 2017 and 2018.

One clip from one of these appearances featuring actors John Challis, best known for playing Boycie in Only Fools and Horses and Sherrie Hewson, of Coronation Street and Loose Women fame speaking before Tetley starts singing on stage in the background.
