The annual Saraswati Puja is returning to the Punjabi Community Centre on January 29.

Swapan Roy, one of the organisers of the Hindu spring festival, said: “It’s a community event and it’s completely English.

“Everyone is invited, every single community in Swindon.

“It’s a success every year and we get a very mixed group of people together, not just from an Asian background.”

The event is based around Sawaswati, who is the goddess of education, culture and art, with the second half featuring entertainment from local artists a raffle and a DJ.

Homemade food will be on offer throughout the afternoon provided by volunteers.

There is a requested donation of £3 per person but Swapan insists that it is not compulsory.

The first session is between 2.30pm and 5.30pm which will involve religious ceremonies. The cultural programme starts at 6pm.
