HUNDREDS of people lined the streets of Blackburn for the 'Festival of Light' lantern parade.

The event is now in its eighth year, having grown from a small event run by one artist working with the council to a large celebration event this year.

It is run by artists from the Blackburn Festival of Light Community Interest Company alongside Blackburn with Darwen Council, Blackburn BID and attracts funding from the Arts Council England, The People's Project, Our Community for the Future and local business support.

Young and old gathered to enjoy the bright lights, beat of the drums and the carnival atmosphere and were not put off by the winter elements.

Speaking whilst enjoying the entertainment, Sonia and Dan Marsden, both 32, from Revidge were both excited about what was in store.

Sonia said: " It is amazing, when you think of the amount of effort that must go into events like this, it is great. This is the first year we have been to it and we went to one previously in Longleat but this is great because it is so interactive and it is good to see the kids taking part in the light event."

The parade started outside the town hall on King William Street and then took in all the sights of Blackburn including going past the cathedral and Blakey Moor.

Jane Wainwright, from Darwen, was watching her daughter Gracie performing with one of the bands.

She said: "I think it is fantastic as it brings the community together and is great to give the kids the chance to do lanterns.

"Everyone seems to be enjoying it and there are people of all ages, races and colours just taking part too. It is great to see so many people out here enjoying it.

"Last year was a bit of a wash-out as the weather was not great but this one is different."

Shelley Ainscough, Kaci Ainscough, Lauren Smith and Payton Smith had smiles on their faces after the parade went past them.

Shelley said: "It was lovely. The kids enjoyed seeing the Indian dancers and it was great to see a mix of different cultures turning out."
