Inquest opens into deaths of much-loved father and son who died in Turkey crash

Abdul Kabir Farid, 41, and his son Mohammed Raees Kabir-Farid, 14, tragically died last Tuesday.

Bradford Coroners' Court heard Mr Farid was driving on a road near Serik,Turkey, when he was involved in a collision with a minibus.

His son was the front-seat passenger. Both were taken to separate hospitals in the Serik area, where they were pronounced dead.

Post-mortem examinations found they died of multiple injuries.

The court heard enquiries are ongoing with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

Senior coroner Martin Fleming described it as a "heartbreaking double tragedy" and adjourned the inquest until April 1 next year, so reports and eyewitness accounts can be obtained from the Turkish authorities.

Around 2,000 people turned out for their funeral yesterday at the Grand Mosque on Westgate.

Mufti Wajid Iqbal said, "From what I understand, Abdul Farid was a man who not only served his family, but also served his community at large."

"He invested his time, his effort and his strength into his child, Raees. They created such a bond in this life, which is something that every person and every one of us will wish to have. Such was their bond, that even God decided that they should spend their life together, and also their tragic demise together.

"Regardless of where we come from, which walk of life we are from or what religion we follow, one thing we can be rest assured of and one thing we can agree on, is that death will come to all of us one day. Therefore, we have to remain humble and have compassion, honour and respect for everyone in our community. This is an important duty of being Muslim, and an important duty of being a human being."
