James Tavernier has hit back at Chris Sutton after the Celtic hero branded him a "serial loser".

Sutton slaughtered the Rangers star for failing to bring any significant silverware to Ibrox during his time as captain.

The comments - in the build-up to Sunday's Betfred Cup final - brought about a reaction from Tavernier who dubbed them "irrelevant".

Chris Sutton says it's last chance for Steven Gerrard and 'serial loser' James Tavernier

And the right-back insists he wants to win the trophy for the supporters.

He said: "People's comments are irrelevant,.

"I am here to do a job and fully believe in this squad and what we are capable of doing.

"We have to win games and win trophies, we haven't come here to be second best. We have to win silverware for the fans.

"We have come a long way as a squad and we have to deliver, the fans have waited long enough and so have enough of the boys in changing room."

Sutton put Tavernier on blast with his claims, explaining how the defender "needs to win something" having spent so long at Gers with only a Scottish Championship and a Petrofac Training Cup win to his name.
