AN eight-year-old girl is on a mission to help homeless veterans.

Mylie Roberts, from Orford, was inspired to raise funds after spotting a former soldier sleeping rough during a trip to Liverpool city centre.

The youngster has since held a dress down day at her school, Beamont Community Primary School on O’Leary Street, and set up an online fundraising page in aid of the Haig Housing Trust – a charity which supports veterans who have nowhere to live after leaving the forces.

She has so far raised more than £500 through her charity drive and paid further visits to the ex-Army man she spotted on the streets in Liverpool.

Her family are also trying to find this veteran a place to stay.

Mum Tracie said: “We went into Liverpool, and as we were coming out of the city centre there was a lad sat there who was homeless and had a sign saying he was an ex-soldier.

“Mylie couldn’t understand why he was homeless when he’d been in the army, and when we got home she asked if we could help him.

“At first, she wanted to give all the soldiers a teddy bear and a blanket.

“She then came up with the idea of having a non-uniform day at school.

“We’ve seen the lad in Liverpool a few times since and Mylie has made up a box of items she wants to give to him – we’ve been trying to get him off the streets, and he does seem to want some help.

Warrington Guardian:

“Mylie is constantly worrying about him, especially in this weather.

“Whatever we can raise will be a big help.”
