THE Borders came out on top at this year's Scottish Health Awards as Dr Howard Kennedy took home the Doctor Award.

Dr Howard Kennedy from Newcastleton has been recognised as one of the most dedicated health care professionals at the annual awards.

Dr Kennedy, who was awarded the ‘Doctor Award’ due to his continuous care for his patients in Newcastleton.

He is also the village’s first responder, providing treatment while patients wait for the emergency services.

Dr Kennedy’s nominator said: “The impact Dr Kennedy has on the medical care in this village is unmeasurable. We have one of the lowest rates of admissions and readmissions due to the care that is provided in the home.”

The Doctor Award, sponsored by BMS, rewards high-quality NHS care and treatment that an individual doctor has provided to people in Scotland.

Organised by the Daily Record, in partnership with NHSScotland and the Scottish Government, The Scottish Health Awards commend NHS staff, support workers, volunteers and specialist teams who go above and beyond, providing vital care and support to patients and their relatives.

The 18th annual Scottish Health Awards 2019, the most prestigious awards ceremony for professionals across NHSScotland and their partners, was held on Thursday, November 14 at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange.

The awards are made up of 17 categories designed to celebrate the work and achievements of NHS staff, specialists, volunteers and support workers.
