PEDESTRIANS hurt in an horrific crash on Botchergate are still recovering from their injuries, a court has heard.
Shocking CCTV images of the moment when 18-year-old Owen Brown’s Ford Fiesta slammed into a group of people outside a pub on a Saturday night was played Carlisle Crown Court as he was sent to a young offenders’ institution for 29 months..
The teenager had been driving his car at between 48mph and 54mph. The accident happened as a Skoda taxi pulled across his path towards Portland Place.
The Fiesta rammed into it, and then careered into pedestrians standing outside the Border Rambler.
Earlier, Brown, now 19, of Dalston Road, Carlisle, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Stephen Reay, 57, the taxi driver whose car he crashed into, admitted careless driving.
Brown was also banned him from driving for 56 months.
The judge imposed six penalty points on Reay’s licence and fined him £400. The taxi driver will have to go before a licensing panel to see if he can continue his taxi work.
One of the most seriously hurt was Adam Bunting, of Whitehaven. The collision left him with two fractured vertebrae in his lower back, and fractures to his cheekbone and eye socket. He also sustained a bleed to the brain.
