AMIR Khan has revealed the latest plans for his multi-million pound wedding venue.

The £5m Washington Road facility has been empty since the building went up in 2015 but now the Bolton-born boxer has announced that work on the interior is set to begin.

He says the building will be transformed into a “one-stop wedding shopping mall”, with 18 retail units on the ground floor devoted to wedding businesses. The development will also include three wedding halls and a restaurant, alongside a rooftop shisha bar, and is expected to create as many as 200 jobs.

In addition, Mr Khan hopes to develop an area of wasteland at the rear of the 3.5-acre site into housing.

A spokesman for the boxer said: “Amir is finishing off the wedding hall and we are hoping to have it all complete by August 2020, we will have 18 retail units on the ground floor that will be occupied by wedding related businesses - a one-stop wedding shopping mall - also three wedding halls on the 1st and 2nd floor and restaurants on the 3rd floor, we are hoping to create 200 jobs for the local community of Bolton.

“Amir is also planning to build residential housing on the land at the rear and had a fantastic meeting with Bolton Council yesterday. Amir will see the job through and is overwhelmed by the support of all the local community.”

In addition, Mr Khan will also aim to build a car park suitable for 200 vehicles.

The latest proposals first came to light when the 32-year-old sent out posts to fans on Facebook and Snapchat but the project was started when he submitting a planning application to the council in 2013.

This was following by construction work which began in 2015 and has since been intermittent.

In March, after work had been stalled for some time, the former world champion opened the future of the building up to the public, suggesting part of the site could be apartments, a hotel or even a shopping mall.

But, just a week later firefighters were called to the building when a blaze engulfed building materials. The fire was believed to have been started deliberately.
