A CHURCH will open its doors tonight so people can pay their respects to a man who died on Carlisle’s Dixon’s Chimney.
The highly public nature of the tragedy has left Carlisle shocked, prompting a flood of tributes to 53-year-old, Phil Longcake on social media and tonight people are able to remember him by signing a book of condolence or lighting a candle at St James Church, Denton Holme.
Reverend Simon Bickersteth said: “The death of Phil was very tragic. It was a very public event.
“So many people witnessed his death and it has had such an impact on the local community.
“Dixon’s Chimney is within our parish and we just felt it was the right thing to do to offer a space for people to come and remember Phil and sign a book of condolence for him family or light a candle in his memory.”
The church is open between 6pm and 8pm.
“People are invited to come in and spend as long as they would like here,” added Reverend Bickersteth.
“It’s for anyone in the community to come in.
“The plan is we will pass the book of condolence on to his family.
“We also have a donation box that will go to Carlisle Eden Mind.”
