A MASTER butcher has been awarded for his creative sausages at the Butcher’s Guild Awards.

Kevin Berkins, of The Fence Gate in Fence, earned the top spot for his old English breakfast pork in the ‘traditional sausage’ category.

The award was presented by celebrity chef Lesley Waters, who is regularly featured on ITV’s This Morning kitchen.

Mr Berkins, member of the Master Chef Association, said: “This award is testament to a lifetime of working with food.

“I am proud we’ve been recognised in this way.

“Many of our guests and customers at The Fence Gate and The Eagle often remark that our sausages are the best in the country.

“I am happy they’ve been found to be correct.”

The sausages are served on the menu of the brasserie at The Fence Gate and The Eagle at Barrow.

They are also served for breakfast at The Fence Gate Lodge.

The award was given out as part of National Sausage Week, which ran last week.

As well as being a master butcher and master chef Mr Berkins is also a gin master and The Fence Gate has a Guinness World Record for the most varieties of gins, 623.

The Fence Gate is run by a father daughter team, Mr Berkins and his daughter Keeley Beaumont.

Mr Berkins has also made it to the final of the Lancashire Tourism Awards, where The Fence Gate Lodge has been listed in the ‘perfect stay’ category.
