Blackburn has some of the best curry houses in the North West. Here are 6 you should try.

Shad House Tandoori, Wensley Road

It may look like a house converted into a small restaurant but Shad House is one of Blackburn’s best kept secrets.
A good selection of curries and the food comes freshly made with decent service too.
There is space to sit but I think deliveries and take outs tend to be more popular.
The chicken and lamb curries are definitely worth sampling.

Haweli, Eanam

You probably passed this place several times on the way to work and not given a thought to actually stopping off for a curry.
The Haweli is a strange little set-up (it is quiet and the carpet gives it a homely feel) but it still manages to serve-up some decent dishes.
It is popular for the huge tawa (large pan) – basically a mix of kebabs, diced chicken, naan, chips, curry (lamb, chicken and lentil) dishes which will set you back £35 but is large enough to feed a large family.
I am not too keen on the kebabs but the daal (lentils) and chicken curries definitely hold their own.

Imran’s Tandoori, Wensley Road

Amazingly you have two great places on the same stretch of road. Imran’s is slightly larger and tends to get busier as the evening goes on.
Now, this may not be everyone’s cup of tea with the dated look but you get a really good chicken karahi here and the service is friendly.
Again, it is very popular with deliveries and pick-ups and you won’t break the bank.

Khyber Restaurant & Takeaway, Whalley Range

These guys have been serving some of the best curries in town since the sixties and that's proably why they still have so many loyal customers.
From the famous Keema Andah dish (mince-meat with boiled egg) to the Butter Chicken, the Khyber is in many ways the standard bearer in Blackburn.
The curries are a major attraction here but the menu features burgers and pizzas.
You could quite easily feed four people and send them on their way content that they had a great night for less than £26.

Kebabish Blackburn, Whalley New Road

Not renowned for curries but you will be able to pick up the best Saag Ghosht (lamb curry with spinach) this side of Birmingham.
The secret is to ask for the VIP Ghosht. No idea why it is named that but it makes for one hell of a dish.
It might prove to be a little spicy for the amateurs but for the rest of us it is a class apart.

East Z East Blackburn

This plush restaurant opened last summer and like most new places you have to give them a chance to bed in.
It is quite easy to build a palace and then serve us sub-standard food as I have learnt on my travels. But on a recent visit here I was actually quietly impressed. The Shahi Keema, Chicken Liver and Channa Daal stand out for those wanting something a little bit different.
You could order the impressive naans but I tend to keep it low key with the chapattis.
It is obviously a little more expensive than the others on this list but that is understandable.
It has a bar too that might prove to be an added attraction.
