SHOPS at a Bury shopping centre have been broken in to.

Two premises at The Mill Gate in the town centre, the Heron Foods supermarket and Poundbakery, were burgled in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

An offender damaged the shop fronts, including smashing the Heron Foods store's doors and windows.

It is as yet unknown if the offender made off with any items, however, a man was arrested by police.

Officers remain on the scene throughout the morning morning carrying out investigations.

A spokesman for The Mill Gate Shopping Centre, said: "Two premises were broken into last evening causing damage both internally and to external glazing.

"It is believed the offenders were apprehended by the police."

An eyewitness added: "The Heron Foods front door has been smashed through and it looks like someone has thieved the place.

"It's an absolute tip outside and it looks like the shop has been completely shaken up."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Police were called shortly before 5am on Tuesday October 1, 2019, to a report of a break-in at a premises on Market Street, Bury.

"Officers attended and detained a male at the scene on suspicion of burglary."

Heron Foods and Poundbakery been approached for information.
