Police have charged a teenager with murder over a street assault that left a man fatally injured.

The 17-year-old is accused of murdering Amaan Momand in Alcester Road South, Maypole, last Thursday.

It’s alleged the teenager – who is too young to legally be named – assaulted the 23-year-old after a row broke out in the street.

Mr Momand was transferred to hospital in a critical condition but never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead on Sunday. A post mortem examination has shown that he died from a head injury.

The teenager – who was arrested from an address in Handsworth on Sunday night – will appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court today.

He is the second person to be charged by West Midlands Police in connection with the killing.

Jamie Taylor, aged 21 of Tidworth Croft, Kings Heath, appeared before magistrates on Saturday charged with wounding; that charge will be reviewed in due course in light of Mr Momand’s death. Taylor has been remanded into custody ahead of his next crown court appearance scheduled for 18 October.

Detective Inspector Michelle Allen said: “The assault happened before 5pm on Thursday 19 September; I’m still appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to get in touch if they’ve not already spoken to police.

“We’re determined to get justice for Mr Momand and his family.”
