CYCLISTS saddled-up in support of a hospice.

Around 200 people took part in the 14th annual Bronte Mountain Bike Challenge, on Sunday.

Riders could choose from four routes, each named after a Bronte sibling and ranging in distance from 13.1 to 35.1 miles.

The event, organised by Manorlands’ cycling support group and sponsored by All Terrain Cycles, started and finished at Oxenhope Community Centre.

All proceeds go to Manorlands.

Each finisher received a medal and pie and peas.

Andrew Wood, a fundraiser at the Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice, said the event was a huge success – despite wet weather.

“There was a massive downpour as the riders set off but people still had smiles on their faces!” he said.

“It was a good event and feedback was very positive, plus some excellent times were achieved.

“In wet conditions you expect there to be one or two issues, but other than the odd mechanical problem everything went very smoothly.

“We had lots of volunteers out helping, including many who were volunteering for the first time.

“They provided support in many different ways – such as marshalling the routes, helping with the timing, and cooking the pie and peas.

“The work of the volunteers is invaluable and without them, these events wouldn’t happen.

“A big thank-you goes to them all.”

He also pays tribute to All Terrain Cycles for its backing, and thanks farmers and landowners who allowed access.

It is hoped that once all sponsorship money has been collected, around £6,000 will be raised.

Manorlands provides palliative care, advice and support for people across Airedale, Wharfedale, Craven and North and West Bradford, who are living with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families.

The inpatient hospice offers round-the-clock assessment and specialist care to help manage patients’ symptoms. In addition, a day service helps people avoid unnecessary trips to hospital, as well as offering social opportunities. And there are community services for people who prefer to receive palliative care at home.
