AN event is being held at Specsavers in Keighley on Saturday (Sept 28) to raise awareness of eye health.

The day of activities will also celebrate the relaunch – following a refurbishment – of the store, at Queensway in the Airedale Shopping Centre.

Representatives of Guide Dogs will be present and money will be raised for the charity.

The event will run from 10am to 4pm.

Information will be available in support of National Eye Health Week, which runs until Sunday.

“We have invited some guests to help raise awareness of the importance of keeping eyes healthy,” said a spokesman.

“Velma has swapped Scooby-Doo for the event and will be joined by some very special dogs and their owners throughout the day, raising money for Guide Dogs.

“We will be handing out ‘healthy eye’ foods and lots of information.”

There will also be crafts, to tie-in with a Crafty Keighley event taking place in the shopping centre.

Tips for healthy eyes include eating the right foods. Nutrients found in many fruit and vegetables and fatty acids derived from fish, nuts and oils can help protect your sight.

Vitamins B and E can help protect against cataracts while omega-3 fish oils help maintain healthy blood vessels inside the eye.

Advice also includes giving-up smoking – research shows smokers have a greater risk of sight loss than non-smokers.
