KEIGHLEY Town Council hopes to get local people involved in an innovative new project to greenify Keighley and help save the planet.

The community tree planting programme could see the creation of wildflower highways, foragers’ walks and hedgehog hotels.

Pip Gibson, the council’s project coordinator, said a working partnership of key agencies and community groups had been set up to support the initiative.

She said: “Over the next few months we will be talking to residents in their own communities so they can share ideas and find out how to get involved. So far we have had some really good ideas.”

One of the leading lights of the campaign is Cllr John Kirby, chairman of the town council’s Allotments and Landscapes committee.

He said: “Keighley Town Council is committed to addressing issues of climate change and the loss of local green spaces.

“It’s a big issue for lots of Keighley people so we have decided to take the first step and do something practical that the whole community can get involved in.

“We have identified a number of key locations belonging to the town council that can be developed to provide sustainable woodlands, a home for wildlife and a fantastic natural resource for all kinds of recreational and educational projects.”
