AN ARSON investigation has been launched by police after a car fire spread to a nearby house - leaving two people requiring treatment.

A fire engine from Somerton, one from Taunton and two from Martock were sent to Honeylands, in Curry Rivel, at around 11.30pm last night (Monday) after reports the vehicle fire had spread to a house with people inside.

An elderly woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, while a male was taken to hospital, also suffering from smoke inhalation.

A spokesman "When the crew got in attendance the officer in charge confirmed all persons were free and clear of the house," said .

At around 2am, the officer in charge requested the attendance of an additional fire engine and the incident support unit.

"Fire Control sent one Fire Engine from Ilminster, the Incident Command Unit from Street and the Incident Support Unit from Yeovil," the spokesperson said.

At around 2.30am, fire crews reported the blaze was under control, leaving the vehicle destroyed, while a nearby car suffered some damage.

The porch of the property was destroyed, while the house itself suffered 30% fire damage, firefighters said.

"To extinguish the fire the crews used six breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, one safety jet, two thermal imaging cameras, one triple extension ladder and one roof ladder," the spokesperson added.

"The Fire and Rescue Service are still in attendance monitoring the area and the cause of this fire is still being investigated."

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police, said: "We’re appealing for information following an arson in Somerset.

"At about 11pm on Monday (September 16), two vehicles were set alight in Honeylands, Curry Rivel.

"If you saw anything suspicious around this time or have any information that could help with our investigation, please call us on 101 and give the call handler the reference 5219214482."
