Plumes of smoke could be seen in the sky this morning after a large fire broke out at Omega Proteins in Thornton.

Emergency crews arrived at the abbbatoir, based on Half Acre Road, around 8am, according to one witness.

Local Robin Naylor says he can see around 30 different appliances on the scene, including fire engines, major incident units and ambulances.

He told the Telegraph & Argus: "I was walking the dog along Half Acre Lane around 8am and saw a huge orange and brown plume of smoke rising into the air, probably 100 metres.

"It quickly spread over Denholme. First fire engine arrived at the Omega entrance shortly after.

"When they got through they raced towards the site but evidently could find no hydrant there. So, for next hour, numerous appliances arrived and they had to pump water from appliance to appliance for over 1km.

"I hope no one had been seriously hurt."

Firefighters across the district got the call out at 8.14am, hearing news of an "industrial factory on fire".

A number of crews are in attendance, including Illingworth; Fairweather GreenBingley; Halifax; Rastrick; Stanningley; Pontefract; Bradford; Killingbeck; Huddersfield; Skelmanthorpe and Otley.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire said the building is 75 per cent involved in fire - using two large jets to tackle the blaze.

The 67 bus, a service run by The Keighley Bus Company,  is currently unable to serve James St and Hill Top Thornton stops due to the fire.

A spokesperson for the bus company said: "The first two buses have been allowed to pass, with delays, but all others will divert via Thornton Road in both directions until further notice."
