An 11-year-old Sutton girl has written to supermarkets across the country in the hope it may spark an idea that may save the planet

Maryam Faruque penned her letter during summer vacation, with the focus being on the thought that reusing, rather than recycling plastics, could do a lot of good for the environment.

"Human race can only survive and thrive on planet earth," she told the Sutton Guardian.

"If we fill it up with an abundance of trash, especially plastic waste, we will destroy its ecological balance and the generations that are yet to come will be left with a dirty and polluted world, this is why I feel so strongly about this cause."

In her letter, she focused on one issue in particular.

This being liquid soap and the plastic dispensers they come with.

"Almost everyone uses liquid soap in their homes, once they finish the handwash, the plastic dispenser is thrown out into the trash leading to plastic waste being created or it is sent for recycling which is expensive and also causes pollution," the letter read.

"This is bad for the environment not to mention that some of the waste gets dumped in the oceans and seas which is harmful and unhealthy for our planet’s marine wildlife."

But does she have a solution? You bet she does.

"I thought that if all the supermarkets incorporated the likes of 'naked shopping', a concept being tried in some parts of the world,to fill up dispensers with liquid soap, so when people need

to stock up on soap they simply come and refill their containers or plastic dispensers by reusing the one they have," her letter continued.

She said every single CEO she wrote to has messaged her back, saying her idea will be considered for trial and implementation.

She was delighted by the response and hopes her idea can make some contribution to making the world a better place to live.

"I hope more and more of us reuse what we already have to help save our precious environment.”

To all the supermarkets operating in my country. Dear Sir, My name is Maryam Faruque and I am 11 years old .

I have just finished year 6 and I am enjoying my summer vacations. I hope you are having a great time in summer too. I have had a wonderful idea and I penned it down sometime back but could not send it across to you due to being super busy with my SAT exams and school.

I would like to share it with you now. I am not allowed to have a personal email ID as I am still not old enough, so I will be sending it across to you from my mum’s email ID.

I strongly feel that this simplistic and easy change will be very effective and cause a big impact on how much plastic use we can reduce and do our bit to save our environment. Almost everyone uses liquid soap in their homes, once they finish the handwash, the plastic dispenser is thrown out into the trash leading to plastic waste being created or it is sent for recycling which is expensive and also causes pollution.

This is bad for the environment not to mention that some of the waste gets dumped in the oceans and seas which is harmful and unhealthy for our planet’s marine wildlife.

As a human I feel sad and ashamed about this situation. We should now do all we can to help save our planet and especially the wildlife.

We should now reduce the amount of plastic waste and put right what the humans before us damaged. How can we do this?

I thought that if all the supermarkets incorporated the likes of 'naked shopping', a concept being tried in some parts of the world, to fill up dispensers with liquid soap, so when people need to stock up on soap they simply come and refill their containers or plastic dispensers by reusing the one they have.

It will obviously be cheaper. As can be seen some stores have already started doing this but with food products. Wouldn’t it be great if other stuff could be purchased in the same manner?

Why stop there; this can be done with all other sorts of things such as: glue, paint, washing up liquid, laundry detergent, shampoo and other liquid products.

I hope my idea is taken into consideration. I would be delighted if I could be sent a reply about whether my idea can be put into action or not. Thank you, Your sincerely, Maryam Faruque London Borough of Sutton
