A GROUP of Bangladeshi firefighters travelled more than 5,000 miles across the world to visit Lancashire fire services' training centre.

The officers from the Bangladeshi Fire Service and Civil Defence visited the training centre in Leyland to look at how the county's urban search and rescue teams operate.

Phil Whittaker, the urban search and rescue station manager, said: "Officers from the Bangladeshi Fire Service and Civil Defence were receiving an information overview of Lancashire's urban search and rescue capabilities.

"They were very receptive, following tragic incidents in their homeland."

At least 70 people were killed as a fast-moving fire swept through a historic district of Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, in February.
