THIS picture from the Lancashire Telegraph's archives shows The Towngate, Great Harwood.

The view, believed to date from the 1880s, has been taken from Church Street.

It is looking towards the site now occupied by the National Westminster Bank building and the former Urban District Council offices, which opened in 1900.

By then, Elias Berry had moved his ironmongery business to two premises in Queen Street around the corner.

Among the implements on sale at his shop here are hay rakes and forks, a scythe, horse collars and a tin tub.

And the wares he advertises include spades, pickaxes, grates, fenders and kitchens ranges.

To the right, in the shop with a gable above its first-floor window, is a barber's.

Perhaps you remember The Towngate back then. If so we’d love to hear from you.
