Albion have opened talks with Swansea boss Graham Potter.
Discussions are expected to continue over the next 48 hours with a view to him taking over in succession to the sacked Chris Hughton.
The Seagulls triggered the release clause of approaching £3 million late this afternoon.
Talks will initially take place over the phone and by email with Potter set to travel to Sussex over the weekend if all goes as planned.
Potter - who is married with three young children - was offered a new deal at the Liberty Stadium but has told Swans he wants to join Albion.
