THE number of people who die after hospitalisation in Bradford is 'as expected', according to NHS figures.

Data on the Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI) was released today.

The SHMI is the ratio between the actual number of patients who die following hospitalisation and the number that would be expected to die on the basis of average England figures, given the characteristics of the patients treated there.

It includes deaths which occurred in hospital and deaths which occurred outside of hospital within 30 days (inclusive) of discharge.

For 2018, at the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which includes the BRI and St Luke's, the figure for expected deaths was 2,125, with observed deaths standing at 1,940.

This places it in the 'as expected' banding, when compared to the national baseline.
