A CLOSE friend of the owner of S&S Jewellers on Leeds Road has revealed dramatic details of Tuesday’s shocking ram-raid on the store.

Taseen Khan runs Deli Chez, which is next door but one to the jewellers and says that Sajid Younis, who runs S&S, is like a family member.

CCTV footage from his shop shows the moment the ram-raiders burst into the jewellers, attacking Mr Younis and putting his young grandson in danger.

Mr Khan said: “They parked the Shogun outside at about 9.30am then left in the Mercedes (the eventual getaway car).

“The raiders came back at 11.47am and when a customer went into the shop a couple of minutes later, they saw that as their opportunity.

“They reversed into the shop front then burst through the door. Sajid had his grandson with him and he could have been killed if he’d been stood where he was a few moments earlier.

“Sajid was attacked by the raiders and they landed a couple of punches on him before getting away. They came out with a tray of jewellery and it was all over in about 30 seconds.

“It’s the fourth time something like this has happened since he opened up 19 years ago.

“One night two months ago, people tried to get in through the back with a hacksaw to steal jewellery but they failed.”

Mr Khan said it felt like a personal attack given his links with Mr Younis and his family.

He said: “We go to each other’s weddings and funerals.

“I actually went into business with his brother Majid 17 years ago, but his father wanted him to help Sajid out at the jewellers.

“Sajid’s wife helps him out too and his other two brothers live out in Pakistan, where the family also has a jewellery business.”

West Yorkshire Police yesterday released a statement, saying: “Officers were called at 11.50am to the jewellers, to a report a grey Mitsubishi shogun car had reversed into the store.

“Three suspects entered the store, with one armed with a bat. A fourth male was parked in a black Mercedes nearby.

“The suspects made off in the Mercedes in the direction of Thornbury with a quantity of jewellery.
