A CRICKET match in memory of a former Bolton School headteacher who died suddenly earlier this year will be held on Bank Holiday Monday.

Edgworth CC will field a select XI to play against Bolton School alumni to compete for the Merv Brooker Trophy.

It is the first annual match to remember Mervyn Brooker’s contribution to both the school and the club.

Mr Brooker died unexpectedly, in January, at the age of 64 from complications arising from meningitis.

He was described as having laid the foundations of the success of Bolton School today and had led the boys’ division from 2003 to 2008.

Mr Brooker was passionate about sport and enjoyed watching football – Burnley FC, then Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bolton Wanderers.

He also played cricket at all levels, up to minor counties for Cambridgeshire and Staffordshire.

Mr Brooker was a keen hill walker and a regular visitor to the fells of the Lake District.

He had also trekked at high altitude on several continents.

Monday's match takes place from 1.30pm at Edgworth Cricket Club, Bolton Road, Edgworth.
