THREE members of staff at Whiston Hospital’s Maternity Unit have received national recognition after winning prestigious awards, including the coveted Midwife of the Year title.
Specialist Midwife, Joanne Battensby, has been named ‘Midwife of the Year’ at the British Journal of Midwifery Practice Awards 2019.
Joanne is a Perinatal Mental Health Midwife and does an incredible job supporting mums and their families.
Joanne is a champion for women supporting those who may need extra support with their mental health throughout their pregnancy and beyond.
Sarah Jones
Specialist Midwife, Sarah Jones, has been named ‘Members’ Champion’ at the annual Royal College of Midwives Awards for her ‘phenomenal’ support of fellow midwives.
Sarah is passionate about promoting the wellbeing of maternity staff and has been praised for encouraging the further education and progression of staff in the unit in a supportive and caring culture.
Maternity Healthcare Assistant, Sarah Hynes also received a national ‘Cavell Star Award’ for her tireless dedication to the Maternity Unit. Nominated by her colleagues, Sarah won the award for constantly going out of her way to support colleagues and families, promoting the incredible work that healthcare assistants do within the hospital.

Sue Redfern, Director of Nursing and Midwifery, said: “We are so incredibly proud of our maternity staff and the dedication they show to providing the very best care to the families they serve. We receive a vast amount of positive feedback from women and families who have their babies at our Maternity Unit, and I am thrilled that they are rightly receiving the recognition they deserve.”
