WASTE from gardens in Bradford is being re-cycled to make compost and sold back to the public.

The peat-free Yorganics product is now nationally accredited and on sale across Booths stores, after it was put together using the green waste recycled by people living in Bradford, Kirklees, North Yorkshire, Leeds, Wakefield, Rotherham and Sheffield.

It is taken to local processing facilities where it undergoes a rigorous and highly scrutinised 11-week process to turn it into a compost which meets the British Standards Institution’s PAS100 standard, a nationally recognised standard within the organics recycling sector.

Yorganics is now available in 25 Booths stores across North Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria.

And the product is proving popular with shoppers with 1,246 bags being sold in the first month of it going on sale.

It follows a pitch made by Yorganics and its distributor, Harrogate-based Harper Bagged Products, to Booths’ buyer Tom Hargreaves.

Mr Hargreaves said: “We’re continually looking for ways to enhance our horticulture offering to customers, not only is Yorganics environmentally friendly but it’s also made in Yorkshire and we try where possible to support our local suppliers. It’s a great addition to the range and combined with a market-leading deal, it’s proving popular with our customers.’’

Yorganics Field Sales Executive Sam Wright said: “Getting our peat-free, 100% recycled, local sourced compost into a highly-regarded retailer like Booths is a major boost and we are delighted it is selling so well, so quickly.

“It means Yorganics is now available across an even wider geographical area and along with our fantastic other stockists, we are raising awareness of our nationally accredited product which ideal for domestic, horticultural and agriculture use.

“Because it starts life in peoples’ gardens and effectively returns there, it is an excellent example of closed loop recycling, which is so important as we strive to protect the environment.”

Neil Harper, managing director of Harper Bagged Products, said: “The feedback we are receiving from the stockists we are distributing Yorganics to is that this a high quality product which is proving very popular with shoppers because it comes from locally recycled green waste and they feel by using it, they are doing their own little bit for the environment.”
