TWO men were rescued and residents of five neighbouring homes were evacuated as firefighters dealt with a blaze at a terraced house in Royton.

They were called to the blaze on Saturday at 5pm when the blaze broke out in the basement of the Holden Fold Lane home where two motorcycles were kept.

The two men were treated at the scene by the North West Ambulance Service.

A fire service spokesman said: “The3 fire started in the basement, where there were a couple of motorbikes.

“The fire spread through the basement and up the stairs into the kitchen. When we arrived the basement was well alight and there was smoke coming out of the first floor.

“We’ve had four fire engines and four breathing apparatus and there were male casualties suffering from smoke inhalation.”
