POLICE prevented a man from jumping off a balcony at Bolton’s Market Place shopping centre.

The incident happened shortly after 5.30pm on Thursday.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Police were called to reports of concern for the welfare of a man at The Market Place Shopping Centre at 17.37.

“The man engaged with officers and was detained under the Mental Health Act.”

An eyewitness told The Bolton News: "Got there about six and there was incident ambulance teams there and a police van.

"When going back around nine there was more police vans and an officer in the road near Argos. Something had to be happening as they didn't leave the whole time. I was at a restaurant facing it.”
