A ‘VIOLENT and controlling’ man raped a woman and sexually abused her with a screwdriver after giving her 50 black eyes during almost daily violence, a jury heard.

The complainant alleges that the man dislocated her nose, fractured her ribs, knocked her out with a beer bottle and stabbed her in the arm and legs during their ‘very volatile’ relationship.

The 22-year-old, who the Telegraph & Argus has decided not to name to avoid risk of identifying his alleged victim, is on trial at Bradford Crown Court denying rape, assault by penetration, four allegations of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and a count of controlling behaviour.

The jury has heard that he admits offences of intimidation and controlling behaviour while in prison on remand, and perjury during an earlier trial.

Prosecutor Matthew Bean told the court yesterday that the woman, aged in her late teens, spilt up with the man several years ago.

He had been repeatedly violent during their on and off relationship, hitting her on an almost daily basis, it is alleged.

He is said to have knocked her out with a beer bottle, threatened her with knives and injured her ribs by hitting her with a hockey stick in Bradford.

After the woman had ended the relationship, she says the man pushed her face down on a sofa and raped her at an address in Keighley.

“She felt unable to fight or scream, she simply froze,” Mr Bean said.

The following day, the man is said to have pushed the woman down some cellar steps before stabbing her in the bottom with a screwdriver and sexually abusing her with it.

The jury heard that she fell to the floor bleeding before going to a friend’s house for help.

She was taken to hospital where she revealed to a nurse what had happened, Mr Bean said. The police were alerted and went to the address where she had been staying, finding a blood-stained dressing gown.

The man had left the property but his fingerprints were found on a glass and a lager can at the address, it was alleged.

Mr Bean said the man, who made no comment in his police interview, was charged and remanded in custody.

But the complainant refused to provide a police statement or give evidence against him, saying she had no memory of the incident. During the trial, the man produced a letter he had forged from the woman saying she wanted all the charges to be dropped and concluding ‘love you millions.’

He claimed he had received it while in prison on remand and the trial was halted for further investigations to be made.

Released on bail, the man arranged to meet the woman and punched her in the face, giving her a black eye, the jury heard.

In September last year, she contacted the police and gave an account of what she claimed was a controlling and violent relationship.

In her recorded interview played in court, she said he had given her 50 black eyes, a catalogue of other injuries and locked her in a cellar for three hours.

“The list goes on,” she said. “More or less, I got beaten every day.”

She said: “I always thought ‘did I do something to trigger it off?’”

The trial continues.
