A Weymouth musician is making soundwaves in support of mental health, with a silent event being held on Weymouth Beach.

Billy Hutchinson, who plays with local band The Leggomen, says has organised a 30-minute Silence on the Sands event – happening at 7pm on Sunday, March 10 – as a way of giving give people an alternative to talking about their mental health issues.

"We're constantly being told we need to speak about our problems – which is definitely important - but I wanted to do something for all those people out there who may be thinking "I don't want to talk – but I want to feel better,"" he said.

"So many of us could benefit from spending time outdoors in the environment alongside other people, but may not necessarily feel like having a conversation."

Mr Hutchinson said he organised the event along with friend Josh Jenkins, who works for charity Speak Out, to give people a reason to come together and sit silently in solidarity – whether they're facing problems due to bereavement, mental health issues, "or just to enjoy the sounds of the wind and sea".

There are no rules, other than a request for mobile phones to be switched off if possible.

"My inspiration came from the two minutes of silence that people usually observe during events such as Remembrance Day – I realised how powerful silence can be", Mr Hutchinson added.

"It also got me thinking about meditation and mindfulness, and how the elements and nature can really help you out, if you take time to listen.

"I wanted to use the beach as it's right here on our doorstep, and it's free."

As a suggestion, Mr Hutchinson is inviting those who attend to bring a stone upon which they can write any worries, before collectively casting them into the sea at the end of the 30 minutes, to symbolise letting-go of troubles.

All are welcome to join the free event. The group will meet at the Pavilion end of Weymouth Beach in front of the Boat Café – which the organisers say will be providing free tea and coffee for people who attend Silence in the Sands.

People are being reminded to wear warm clothes and a blanket to sit on, if needed.
