A BELEAGUERED allotment society has launched an appeal to improve security.

Harpers Lane Allotment Society saw 50,000 honey bees and their hives set alight and killed earlier this year.

During the past three months more than 70 plot holders have been left devastated after their sheds have been damaged or burgled. In response, society members have started night patrols, installed security lighting and this weekend planted brambles and spiky hedges along the perimeter of the site to deter intruders.

But because it will take time for these to grow, the society has launched a fundraising campaign to provide more immediate security for the allotment.

Society secretary, Kiye Simister, said: “Raising funds will help us secure the site by installing CCTV that will either deter or catch the perpetrators. In addition to this we need better fencing systems. These come at a high cost and we are trying to subsidize this by applying for any available grants.”

She added: “It is our hope the fundraising will help protect the future of Harpers Lane and prevent our plot holders having to go through this ordeal again.”
