A MAN who went into Asda and trashed part of the alcohol aisle said he did it because the police were following him.

Blackburn magistrates heard Christopher Rayner claimed there were voices in his head.

But he denied having any mental health problems and rejected the offer of assistance from the community mental health service.

Rayner, 27, of Westmorland Street, Burnley, pleaded guilty to criminal damage. He was ordered to pay £100 compensation.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said Rayner went into Burnley's Asda on a Sunday afternoon, selected a bottle of wine and smashed it on the floor.

He then pulled over a shelving unit causing all the bottles on that to smash.

"He told police he went in to cause the damage because police were following him every day," said Miss Allan. "He said not real police but voices in his head."

Zabair Afzal, defending, said his client said the police were following him physically and he could hear voices in his head.

"He was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time," said Mr Afzal. "He says he has no mental health problems."
