A PROMINENT Labour councillor has resigned suddenly from the party.

Cllr Debbie Newall handed in her resignation on Monday evening following a meeting of the council cabinet.

Following her departure Cllr Newall, who will continue as an independent for Breightmet ward, said: “II have resigned from the Labour party.

“I have cancelled my membership. It’s entirely personal why I have left. It’s not something I wish to discuss and I do wish the council and all my colleagues on the council all the best for the future.

“I’m absolutely certain the borough is in safe hands with the Labour administration.

“I haven’t got any problem with it, it’s just time for me to move on.”

Cllr Newall has forfeited her seat on the cabinet with her departure, leaving the portfolio for adult social care and health vacant.

Her departure leaves the Labour group with a total of 30 councillors with the collective opposition, now including Cllr Newall, making up an even 30 as well.

The Labour group has been contacted for a comment but did not respond at the time of going to print.
