The moment I mentioned this song on my social networking profile, my status sparked a debate and was inundated with comments regarding the song, its unexplainable popularity and its strange lyrical content.

I have come across many theories about the song and how, despite its lack of musical creativity, it has managed to earn millions of views on YouTube and recognition from respectable well-established musical artists such as ‘Mindless Behaviour’, Alesha Dixon and Radio 1Xtra presenter Twin B.

Some believe, the song is more an ironic homage to other badly written/produced music that also seems to find its way to our radio stations these days whereas some people actually seem to be enjoying the new release.

One of the things that stands out to me is that a lot of people want to show support to the former fish market stall worker in order to help him better his life however I can’t help but question whether that is reason enough to award him the ‘prestigious’ Christmas No.1 title.

The original single is not much different to what the ‘£1 Fish Man’ used to herald at his market stall, with a drumbeat accompaniment.

The song was available to download from the online iTunes store from 7th December for £1.99 (not £1) and there are many remixes also available but nothing I can imagine being the Christmas anthem of 2012.

Now although I am all for showing support to local ‘talent’, my concern is that isn’t this just rewarding bad music purely on the basis of the ‘artists’ personal circumstances? Are we not committing an injustice to music by rewarding artists when their music hasn’t achieved anything to be rewarded for?

There was a lot of hype surrounding this song before it was officially released and I was afraid that I was the only who didn’t understand why. Now that the single is finally out, I am wondering whether this was all one big joke and I have missed the punchline.

MY Verdict: I’m not sure who first heard this gentleman and thought, ‘Ah, that’s a number one Christmas single in the making right there’ but that person owes the music industry a huge apology!
