Thousands of soldiers in riot gear patrolled the streets in Indian Kashmir’s main city and warned residents to stay at home to quell protests over the death of a teenage boy.
The government has banned the assembly of more than four people in Srinagar, which has been rocked by protests since a 14-year-old boy was killed on Sunday when he was hit in the head by a tear gas shell fired by police.
Sajad Ahmed, a local police officer, said the restrictions were imposed to prevent violence from breaking out.
Clashes erupted between rock-throwing protesters and government forces throughout Kashmir as angry mobs took to the streets to protest against the killing.
At least 93 protesters and 33 soldiers have been injured in the clashes.
Shops, businesses and government offices in Srinagar were closed and public buses stayed off the roads for a fourth day today.
