Fine after phone rang in court

A magistrate in Sri Lanka has fined a man £6 for contempt of court and obstructing proceedings when his mobile phone began ringing in the courtroom.

The Slave Island police in the capital city Colombo registered a case against K K Ajith Ashoka, who was in court as a member of the public, and informed him that he had violated the law.

He was fined Rs500 as the magistrate considered this as an act to insult the court.

Under Sri Lankan law, people are required to keep their mobile phones switched off during court proceedings.
