A scheme helping Muslim parents to spot if their children are being radicalised via the internet has been visited by a Government minister.
Shahid Malik MP, Communities and Local Government Minister, came to Harrow on Monday to see the scheme being run by Harrow Council.
On the training courses, Muslim parents are shown techniques to see what websites their children have been on and how to look at deleted browsing histories.
The council says it is aimed at helping parents keep their children away from “the dark side of the web”, for example websites promoting extremism and terrorism.
Mr Malik spoke to Harrow parents who are on the course, and saw some of the skills they are being taught, such as spotting if their child has become withdrawn and difficult after using the computer.
The scheme, which is Government funded under an initiative to prevent violent extremism, has now been running for a year, and the council want to expand it to include more of the borough's Muslim community.
It is also raised interest from other councils and police forces who are considering setting up their own versions.
Councillor Jean Lammiman, who is in charge of community and cultural services, said the scheme aims to “promote an honest discussion between children and parents about the internet".
