The first public screening has been held of the video to “A Better Day” – a new track on the debut album of singer-songwriter Mary HD.
The screening took place as part of a special music industry event organised by Lancashire County Council's Creative Lancashire business development team.
Entitled “How to Make Money in the Music Business”, it was the latest in a series of ‘HIVE network’ events and examined career opportunities within the industry.
Mary HD was invited as a special guest to screen her new video for the first time, and additionally to give a live performance of the song, which features on her debut album, “Beautifully Unexpected.”
Born and raised in Pennine Lancashire, Mary HD recorded part of the video at her former high school in Blackburn - now known as Beardwood Humanities College.
Supported by a full film crew and directed by New York’s finest director Chase Johnson-Lynch (Wu Tang Clan, Alicia Keys) of Square One Pictures, she performed there with ten of the school’s drama students.
The song and the video are to essentially promote peace, integrating a message of hope and forgiveness. Moreover, it is to encourage people of all backgrounds to work together for a more tolerant and peaceful future.
Edward Matthews, (Creative Lancashire development officer), on viewing Mary’s video for the first time, said: “I think the video is great. You see things some things on the news, but the impact of incorporating the visual imagery combined with the music is very touching”
“It was great to see the video getting a public airing,” says Mary HD. “The message is immensely important, and everyone worked very hard to achieve a very powerful and meaningful visual to go hand in hand with the song.
"The teachers at Beardwood did a fantastic job of encouraging me to pursue a career in the entertainments industry and I’m glad that the video has provided some valuable experience for a new generation of performers.”
The A Better Day music video will also be screened at Manchester’s KinoFilm Festival next week, including footage from the behind the scenes.
Mary’s own experience goes back to her very early childhood. She enrolled at dance school at the age of three, studied Drama and other arts subjects at school and, by the age of 15, she had already begun a career in modelling.
She appeared in magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Elle and Maxim and later worked in film and television, appearing as a presenter for Channel M and in feature films such as “The Parole Officer” directed by Steve Coogan. However, she took a turn in her career to pursue music which had always been her main passion. Shortly after completing a European tour with dance act, Uniting Nations, she took the decision to form her own company, Mary HD Entertainment Ltd.
Her album has elicited a very positive response from the music industry. One of her tracks was named Song of the Month by a popular London radio station and a remix version of “A Better Day” was recently released as part of an album entitled “Stop the Wars,” which is raising money for the British Red Cross and Smile, an international children’s charity based in Egypt and the UK.
Mary HD recently finished recording a second music video to accompany “True”, which also appears on her debut album, and she is currently working on a third. All the tracks on the new album can be heard online on her website: www.myspace.com/maryhdmusic.
