TEAM GB swimmer Craig Gibbons took time out of his busy training schedule ahead of this summer’s Olympic Games to coach enthusiastic youngsters at Chalfont Otters Swimming Club.

Gibbons, who is from High Wycombe, is training for two events at the Olympic Games; the 50m freestyle and the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

The 26-year-old had been training for four hours in the pool and one hour in the gym every day but he continues to show as much dedication to his Olympic dream as developing local swimming talent, according to spokesperson Philippa Goldie.

She said: “It’s nice for the children to learn from a local guy, and it shows his complete dedication to not only his training schedule but his sport as well.”

The big dates to remember for Gibbons this summer are July 20 and August 1, where he’ll hope to compete in the finals of the relay and 100m freestyle respectively.

It will be his debut performance at an Olympic Games after narrowly missing out on selection for Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008.

Gibbons, 26, last competed at the European Aquatics Championships in Debrecen, Hungary in May.

The Wycombe swimmer coached three sessions at the Chalfont club, with each consisting of 20 swimmers between the ages of ten and 16.

Goldie said: “He’s done it for a few local clubs and he’s an inspiration to the children.

“The kids absolutely loved it and all came away really enthused, and they’ll be supporting and watching him at the Olympics.

“They had everything signed, from swimming caps to life floats.

“He even got in the water for them and swam two lengths (50m) of the pool in just 21 seconds which was brilliant to watch. I’m sure he’ll get a lot of local support at the Big Screen events in our area.”
