IT has helped more than 200,000 children and now, on its fourth anniversary, Amir Khan’s Gloves Community Centre is set to get even bigger.
To mark the event, a knockout show will be held tonight at the Holiday Inn.
And former World Champion, Amir, will be there to show his support alongside British champions Anthony Crolla and Bury’s Scott Quigg.
The gym, which has provided training to thousands of young people, also enables young people to work with the police, firefighters and the council.
And Amir has promised tonight’s event is just the start of bigger things to come.
He said: “I’m delighted to be celebrating this milestone.
Around 200,000 young people have visited the community centre and we have a fantastic volunteer group, led by police officers and firefighters, which shows kids they can stay off the streets and build better links.
“We have big plans, we’re talking about more partnership working, especially with the council, and will hold even more sessions.”
Bosses from Gloves are also confident some of the young people training there will soon be ready to turn professional.
Amir said: “We’re aiming to get some of these young people to turn pro in the near future and then they will be role models for the whole community.”
Gloves will also play host to both the US and the Pakistan Olympic boxing teams before this summer’s Games.
Amir added: “This will be a boost for Bolton in terms of revenue and media attention.”
Tonight’s event is made up of 13 or 14 bouts with fighters fromthe NorthWest.
Doors open at 6pm with the first bout at 7.15pm.
To buy tickets call Tommy Battel on 07702 042 631 or 01204 520607 or alternatively tickets are available on the door for £10.
Gloves Community Centre runs 12 classes a week for children aged eight to 16, mixed adults, walk in and elite sessions from just £1 a session.
