Croydon Athletic devastated to hear of cricket fixing allegations

Croydon Athletic football club has said it is "devastated and appalled" to hear of allegations of cricket match-fixing by its owner.

Millionaire property developer Mazhar Majeed, who took over the football team in June 2008, is at the centre of international match fixing allegations in the current test match between England and Pakistan.

The allegations were made following a News of the World investigation into betting on the Test match.

A message on Croydon Athletic's website read: "Croydon Athletic Football Club were both devastated and appalled to hear of the alleged match-fixing of international cricket matches by its owner Mazhar Majeed.

"We await the guidance of the Ryman League in the next few weeks. At this moment in time our match against Carshalton Athletic is still scheduled to take place and we hope as many as possible will come along and get behind the team."

In July, a former club chairman who embezzled more than £500,000 from his day job to help prop up the team has been jailed for three years.

Dean Fisher, 36, stole the money by writing false invoices at advertising agency TCS Media.

A Metroplitan Police spokesman said: "Following information from the News of the World we have today arrested a 35-year-old man on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers."
