AMIR Khan should know in the next couple of days if he is to face the biggest test of his career.
The Bolton boxer is set for a huge payday if, as expected, Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez agrees to fight the Bolton boxer in Las Vegas on May 15.
The 23-year-old Khan faces a huge step up in class against an opponent ranked fifth best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Marquez has taken on the best underlined by his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jnr, which he lost on points.
He is currently a double world champion at lightweight and has twice pushed Khan’s stablemate Manny Pacquaio all the way.
Khan, the WBA world light welterweight champion, will probably defend his title on the lucrative American HBO cable channel, and is expected to hit the big time by earning in the region of £5million.
Khan had planned to fight number one contender Marcos Maidana, but there is little interest in the match-up with the Argentinian.
Marquez on the other hand is a huge draw.
Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach told the Daily Telegraph: “Amir will do to Marquez what he did to Marco Antonio Barrera in Manchester last year. He’ll break him up.”
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said he expected the Khan-Marquez fight to be signed soon.
Victory for Khan in his first professional fight outside of the UK would make him a global boxing superstar.
