Afridi faces ban after biting ball

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam has condemned Shahid Afridi’s “unacceptable” actions after he was caught on television apparently biting the ball.

Afridi is thought to be facing a two-match ban and was reportedly called into a hearing with match referee Ranjan Madugalle at the conclusion of Australia’s two-wicket win in Perth, a result which completed a 5-0 series whitewash.

Afridi’s indiscretion seems particularly untoward as he was captaining Pakistan in an ODI for only the second time.

”It’s unacceptable,” Alam told the media. “It shouldn’t have happened but it happened and I feel sorry for him.

”Being a captain you should be above everything but unfortunately it’s happened and it’s up to the referee what sort of charges he’s going to level against him. I have no idea.”

In a bizarre end to the match, an Australian fan also took to the pitch and tackled Khalid Latif to the floor.

Seam bowler Clint McKay condemned the supporter’s intrusion.

”I thought it was disgraceful,” he said. “Something you don’t want to see ever.

”For someone to go out there and to touch one of their players is not on.

”Hopefully it all gets put to bed and he gets a right whack.

”It’s not something you want to happen.

”It’s probably the worst thing that can happen on a cricket field, so hopefully it gets stamped out and we don’t see it again.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan look to have lost their chief selector Iqbal Qasim, who has apparently quit his post following their capitulation against Australia in both the Test and one-day series.

The Daily Telegraph quotes Iqbal as saying: “I am badly hurt and disappointed, so as a man of character I have taken this decision and hope that a proper post-mortem of the team’s performance is done by the PCB to help Pakistan cricket move forward.”
